알던 사람, 그런 사람을 알았는데 있기는 있었는데 두 사람이 죽었다.

한 사람은 그런 사람이고, 또 한 명은 알던 사람이다.

육신으로 죄로 말미암아 알던 사람이며,

또 다른 사람은 영적으로 다시 태어나 영혼이 있음을 깨닫고

거듭난 생명을 가진 사람이다.

전자는 육신의 할례를 받았으며,

후자는 마음의 할례를 영적 이후의 삶을 살면서 받았다.

두 사람이 모두 죽었음에도 날마다 죽는 이유가 또 있는데,

죽어야 하는 이유는 죄가 살아 있어서이다.

선한 싸움이다.

착하고 선하게 살기 위해서는

주님이 주시는 씨앗으로 영혼이 영적으로 다시 태어나야 한다.

십자가에서는 이미 모든 사람의 죄를 대신하여 대속해 주셨다.

그런 사실을 믿음으로, 각자 자신의 죄까지를 모두 포함시켜서

예수님이 십자가에서 하신 일이 정확히 무엇인지를 받아들여야 한다.

한 사람 속에는 속 사람이 있는데,

영적으로 하나님을 발견하고 올바른 진리를 깨닫고

예수님의 십자가에서 하신 일을 받아들이는 믿음으로써

죽음 이후에 영생도 가능하다.

At first glance, Two people reads as a quiet riddle- who are these two, and why have both died? But the poet does not leave us in suspense. The two people are not strangers to each other; they are the same person, seen from two different directions: the self born into flesh, and the self born again in spirit.

The poem opens with a tone of recognition- "I knew such a person." The flesh- self, bound by sin, is defined by what it could not escape. The spirit-self, awaken to the soul's reality,is defined by what it chose to receive.

"The former received the circumcision of the flesh; received the circumcision of the heart."

One of the poem's most striking observations is that death is not a single event but a daily discipline. Even after both selves have died, the poet insists: they must die again each day- "because sin is still alive." This is not despair but sobriety.
